Newberg and Dundee Community Information

Located just 2 miles southwest of Newberg, Dundee is one of several communities in the Willamette Valley area near Route 99. The city was first incorporated in 1895 and today is home to some 3,000 plus residents. Dundee was founded by a group of pioneer families and was named by early resident William Reid of Dundee, Scotland. The weather may have inspired this comparison: the town?s wettest month is December, and annual precipitation is just over 40 inches.

All that rain has its advantages, especially when it comes to agriculture; in particular, the area is ideal for growing grapes. Some of Dundee?s most important businesses are its vineyards and wineries. The Argyle Winery produces award-winning Pinot Noir, chardonnay, and sparkling wines, and features a wine tasting room that is open daily. Duck Pond Cellars winery operates 820 acres of vineyards in Washington and Oregon, and is one of Dundee?s largest employers. Other well-known Dundee wineries include Erath Vineyards, Lange Winery, and the Eryie Vineyards.

Like its neighbor Newberg, Dundee is located close to Champoeg and Bald Peak State Parks; the town is also home to the Riverwood Golf Course. Dundee also boasts many fine restaurants and, during the summer, Dundee Decades (a music and dancing event) takes place on Friday evenings. Shoppers can enjoy a Farmers Market and an outlet mall, while the more contemplative will enjoy a visit to the Magness Memorial Tree Farm.

For nature and recreation at its finest, visitors need look no further than Champoeg State Heritage Park, just a few miles to the southeast. The park provides camping with all the amenities, picnic tables, open fields, an amphitheater, and bike and hiking trails along the nearby Willamette River.

Those considering Dundee as a place to raise a family will be interested to know that Dundee students are served by the newly expanded Newberg School District. Dundee Elementary School has been recently renovated and expanded, thanks to a $36 million bond passed in May 1993; the bond also provided nearly $2 million for technology upgrades in the schools.

If you?re looking for small-town atmosphere in a beautiful natural setting just minutes away from both major metropolitan excitement and relaxing outdoor recreation, Dundee might be the place for you to hang your hat.
